Lakers to Sign Spencer Dinwiddie in First Post-Deadline Addition, per Report
The Los Angeles Lakers are expected to sign Spencer Dinwiddie to a contract for the rest of the season after the point guard clears waivers, The Athletic’s Shams Charania reports.
Dinwiddie spent the first part of the season with the Brooklyn Nets as part of his second stint with the team. Before the trade deadline passed on Thursday afternoon, Brooklyn traded Dinwiddie to the Toronto Raptors in a deal for Dennis Schroder and Thaddeus Young, but Toronto chose to waive Dinwiddie instead of keeping him.
Dinwiddie is averaging 12.6 points and 6.0 assists per game in 48 games this year and adds some veteran depth to the Lakers’ bench.
Los Angeles stayed quiet this trade season, deciding not to make a deal before the deadline passed. Instead, the Lakers chose to survey the buyout market that featured several veteran names, and they landed the Los Angeles native in their first post-deadline move.
The Lakers are currently 28–26 on the season, which is good enough for the No. 9 seed in the Western Conference. After Los Angeles’s win over the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday night, point guard D’Angelo Russell teased Dinwiddie’s addition.
“I’m a fan. Y’all will get to know him soon,” Russell told the media.
The Lakers have three days off before returning to action Tuesday night against the Detroit Pistons.
