Nick Nurse and the Philadelphia 76ers witnessed a scary sight on Sunday afternoon when the veteran guard Tyrese Maxey went down with an injury late in the third quarter against the Dallas Mavericks.

As Maxey looked to drive into the paint, he slipped up and appeared to hit his head on the knee of his defender, which caused a turnover.

“I’m not one-hundred percent sure [where he got hit],” head coach Nurse said after the game. “I know he went down there in kind of a pile there in the lane.”

When Maxey went down, he didn’t get back up right away. Although the Mavs moved the ball in transition, the Sixers were outnumbered as Maxey struggled to get up. Once there was a stoppage, it took some time before Maxey was helped up off the floor.

The one-time All-Star made his way back to the bench to get evaluated. Before the game resumed, Maxey was assisted to the back and wouldn’t check into the game right away. In the visitors’ locker room, Maxey was getting evaluated with his playing status in question.

Not long after, Maxey made his way back to the Sixers’ bench. Shortly after that, he checked back into the game to help the Sixers close out their Sunday afternoon matchup in Dallas with a 120-116 victory.

Following the matchup, Nurse addressed Maxey’s in-game setback and offered a positive outlook on the situation.

“He’s ok,” the head coach told reporters. “He got obviously got hit there. They took him out and checked him, and he obviously came back. I’m sure they’ll check him a little bit again, but he seemed ok.”

Maxey played for nearly 40 minutes on Sunday. During the outing, he scored 24 points and dished out three assists. Maxey was a significant contributor in picking up his team in a game where the Sixers got off to a slow start.

While Nurse couldn’t clear Maxey for future games right then and there, he seems to believe the All-Star guard should be fine moving forward. That’s a great sign for the Sixers, who have been dealing with some key setbacks.

The next time they take the floor will be on Tuesday when the Sixers face the Brooklyn Nets on the road.
