Absurd Joel Embiid Stat is Latest Testament to Historic Scoring Season

76ers star has more 40-point games than six of the league's top stars combined.

After leading the league in scoring back-to-back seasons, Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid is in the midst of his best offensive season. A stat recently went viral that further shows just how historic of a year he is having. 

As we pass the halfway point in the regular season, Embiid is once again one of the league's most dominant forces. Through his first 31 games, the reigning MVP is averaging 35.0 PPG, 11.4 RPG, and 5.9 APG. 

Earlier this week, Embiid faced off against Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets in a nationally televised matchup. He put on a dominant showing, going for 41 points and 10 assists in a victory. This outing marked the eighth time this season Embiid notched at least 40 points in a game. 

Following this performance, a stat started to make waves on social media. Embiid has more 40-point games this season than six of some of the NBA's top talents combined. Among the players mentioned on this list were Kevin Durant, LeBron James, Steph Curry, and Jokic.

Embiid has the most 40-point games in the league this season, but a handful of players aren't far behind. Luka Doncic is the next closest with seven, followed by Giannis Antetokounmpo (6) and OKC Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Sixers guard Tyrese Maxey also has two 40-point barrages of his own this season. 

This metric is not the only testament to Embiid's dominance this season. After a strong outing against the Charlotte Hornets, he became only the third player in history to score 30+ in 20 straight games. The last player to do so was former Sixers guard James Harden. It's now been over two months since Embiid has less than 30 points in a game. The last time it happened was on November 15th in a loss to the Boston Celtics. 

Along with building a strong case for his second MVP, Embiid is also pushing himself into the conversation of greatest scorers ever.
