Daryl Morey’s Statement After Reaching Extension With 76ers
The Philadelphia 76ers made a critical move on Friday by reaching a multi-year contract extension with the team’s President of Basketball Operations, Daryl Morey.
According to an official press release, Morey is set to lead the Sixers through the 2027-2028 NBA season, which reportedly aligns him with the team’s new head coach, Nick Nurse.
“Daryl is one of the best front office executives in sports, and I greatly value his leadership,” 76ers’ Managing Partner Josh Harris said. “I’m thrilled to have reached an agreement to extend his contract and look forward to working together to maximize our chances of competing for an NBA title.”
Morey joined the 76ers’ organization in 2020. At the time, he wrapped up a decade-plus tenure running the Houston Rockets’ front office. As the Rockets were headed for a rebuild, Morey stepped down. Shortly after, he reached a deal to become the Sixers’ President of Basketball Operations, working with the team’s General Manager, Elton Brand.
Since taking over the front office, Morey’s Sixers have achieved a regular season record of 170-89. Every year, they made the playoffs with series wins in the first round each time. Although the Sixers continued to find moderate success in the postseason during Morey’s tenure, they have yet to reach the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 2001.
The ultimate goal of winning a title hasn’t been accomplished for Morey and the Sixers just yet, but a contract extension aligning Morey and Nick Nurse shows the team’s Managing Partners are clearly confident in the duo’s ability to give them the best chances of getting the job done.
“I want to express my appreciation to Josh Harris and David Blitzer for their unwavering support and confidence. Together, we are committed to bringing a championship to Philadelphia,” Morey said on Friday. “I love this franchise and the relationship my family and I have built with our fans and this city. There’s no place I’d rather continue this journey than here.”
The Sixers have struggled to find front office stability in past years since the HBSE acquisition. From the Sam Hinkie process to the Bryan Colangelo burner-gate, the Sixers had a lot of voices going in and out of the front office.
With Morey, they not only have a seasoned leader who joined the team with an impressive resume already, but they also offer him more time to continue working on what he’s already building.
