Embiid, Maxey Soak in Phillies Playoff Vibes Before Sixers' Season
As the Philadelphia 76ers prepare for their 2023-2024 NBA season, their neighbors across the street from the Wells Fargo Center are working on a deep playoff run.
On Thursday night, Sixers center Joel Embiid and the young guard Tyrese Maxey were in attendance at Citizens Bank Park, taking in the Philadelphia Phillies’ ballgame.
For the second-straight season, the Phillies are working on getting to the World Series. Last season, they shocked the baseball world and made a miraculous run to the championship before getting stopped short by the Houston Astros.
The Phillies are back in the tournament this season, following a similar path. In round one, the Phillies took care of business against the Miami Marlins, winning the series in two games by outscoring their opponent 11-2.
While they gave up a game against the Atlanta Braves in the second round, the Phillies took care of business in four games, securing their ticket to the National League Championship Series for the second-straight season.
Last season, several Sixers supported the Phillies throughout their playoff run. Tyrese Maxey was among those who were frequently in attendance, and he made his way back on Thursday night. Embiid also took in the sights and sounds of the playoff atmosphere. Both players donned a different Bryce Harper jersey.
Perhaps, the Phillies could offer a little motivation to the South Philly hoops stars. While the Sixers have been one of the most consistent teams in the Eastern Conference since the Embiid era truly got started, they’ve struggled to put together deep playoff runs.
Every year since 2018, the Sixers have made the playoffs. They’ve advanced to the Eastern Conference Semifinals in all but one of those seasons. Unfortunately, they have yet to conquer the second round despite taking the series to seven games on three different occasions.
Despite the drama currently surrounding the Sixers, they have a major change within the organization that could offer some confidence in the idea that soon, they could finally get over the second-round hump. After parting ways with the head coach Doc Rivers, the Sixers hired Nick Nurse to take over.
Nurse, who coached the Toronto Raptors since 2018, has an NBA Championship on his resume. The Sixers are hopeful his expertise could be a real difference-maker.
All eyes are currently on the Phillies as they put together another exciting run. Soon, the Sixers will be the team with the attention on them, as they anticipate a potential seventh-straight playoff run next spring. By soaking in the good spirits of the ballpark throughout the MLB playoff run, Sixers players are getting some positive energy before they open their season in Milwaukee later this month.
