Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey had a bit of an injury scare on Monday night against the Miami Heat. During the third quarter, the third-year guard was amid a red-hot shooting stretch, knocking down six of his seven shots for 14 points.

In the final seconds of the third quarter, Maxey attempted to collect his 17th point of the quarter with a step-back three right before the buzzer. The Sixers’ guard created just enough space to get a shot off with Miami’s Victor Oladipo in front of him.

Maxey released the ball with one second left. Not only was the 28-footer unsuccessful, but Maxey landed on the foot of Oladipo, which caused the Sixers’ guard to roll his ankle on the play.

“I thought Tyrese absolutely got fouled at the end of the quarter,” said Sixers head coach Doc Rivers after the game. “I thought it was flagrant because he landed on his ankle. And that’s three shots, you know? They’re not perfect, just like we were not.”

Rivers didn’t want to use a couple of tough calls against them and no-calls in favor of the Heat as an excuse as to why the Sixers struggled to come out on top on Monday. But the head coach believed that Maxey should’ve received a trip to the line at the end of the third.

“I’m all right,” Maxey said after the game. “It was kind of funny, I rolled it in the first half, and I did it on that play too. I think I tried to jump shot, and I landed on his foot, but it’s good. It’s all right.”

The play didn’t go Maxey’s way, but the Sixers are fortunate that he avoided a major injury. While Maxey was healthy enough to play eight more minutes in the fourth quarter after the incident, Doc Rivers made it clear the Sixers continue monitoring the young guard’s ankle.

“He’s fine,” said the head coach. “You know, those young guys. It looked like his ankle went over pretty good too. He told me afterward he felt fine. We’ll see tomorrow because that’s when we usually find out.”

The Sixers will take on the Miami Heat once again on the road Wednesday night. It’s too early to determine whether Maxey will play or not, but based on the reaction after Monday’s game, Maxey should be good to go.
