Can Jaden Springer Crack Nick Nurse's Sixers Rotation?
Since being drafted in the first round of the 2021 NBA Draft, Jaden Springer has played just 95 minutes for the Philadelphia 76ers. As he prepares for his third year in the league, could the young guard finally get his shot at earning rotation minutes?
While he hasn't played much for the Sixers, Springer has shined for the Delaware Blue Coats. Last season, he posted averages of 19.0 PPG, 5.3 RPG, 2.8 APG, and 2.4 SPG. Now, playing for a defensive-minded coach, he might get his chance to earn playing time.
Through two preseason games, Springer has done well. In the Sixers' first matchup with the Boston Celtics, he had 14 points, five rebounds, two assists, and one big block on Jayson Tatum. The 21-year-old followed that up on Wednesday by going for 10 points and connecting on a pair of three-point shots.
Following the Sixers' most recent matchup with the Celtics, Nick Nurse praised Springer for how well he's played thus far. "I thought Jaden Springer had another really good solid night," said Nurse. "He continues to just really guard well and make little plays here and there and knock down a couple of shots."
With a new coach taking over the team, competition for minutes is sure to ensue. Given how much Nurse emphasizes the defensive end, Springer could be a guy who sneaks into the rotation. His ability to guard multiple positions makes him a valuable asset on that end of the floor.
The key for Springer earning minutes this season will be finding ways to be productive on the offensive end. If opposing defenses are able to sag off him, he'll end up doing more harm than good.
Based on how he's looked in the preseason, Springer appears ready to start showcasing his talent at the NBA level. Nurse has liked what he's seen thus far, but only time will tell if he'll be rewarded when the regular season gets underway.
