James Harden ‘Determined’ to Start Season With Clippers
Just two summers after engaging in a standoff with Ben Simmons, the Philadelphia 76ers are dealing with another disgruntled guard in James Harden.
Following his first full season in a Sixers uniform, Harden had the option to accept a $36 million salary for the 2023-2024 season or strike a new deal in free agency. Although it seemed Harden was destined to land a significant multi-year deal with the Sixers or the Houston Rockets, the star guard was under the impression he wouldn’t be presented with the deals he desired.
Instead of hitting the open market, Harden accepted his player option for next season. Still under contract with the Sixers, Harden would like to be moved sooner than later. While the situation hasn’t gotten ugly, resembling the standoff between Philly’s front office and Ben Simmons, time hasn’t healed the situation much, either.
ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne noted earlier this week that there was a cool-down period since Harden requested a trade. Spotted hanging out with teammates such as Joel Embiid and Tobias Harris, Harden seems to be on good terms with everybody on Philadelphia’s roster still, but that doesn’t indicate Harden’s had a change of heart.
Earlier this week, Sixers center Joel Embiid mentioned that he hopes Harden changes his mind, but the way he spoke about his star teammate’s trade request, it sounds like he hasn’t heard any different at this time.
The Athletic’s Sam Amick dished the latest on Harden and the Sixers on Thursday, noting that league executives are convinced the Sixers are attempting to keep Harden around for next season. However, Harden’s mind is set on playing for the Los Angeles Clippers.
“Harden’s stance has not changed, a source close to him told The Athletic. He still wants to leave Philadelphia. He’s still upset with how Morey handled his situation heading into possible free agency last month. And even with the recent revelation that Harden attended the same NBPA party as Sixers co-star Joel Embiid and former Sixers owner Michael Rubin in Vegas, he’s still determined to start next season in a Clippers jersey.”
Since requesting a trade from the Sixers, Harden’s most prominent suitor has been the LA Clippers. Not one to take less for the sake of getting a trade done, Philly’s President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey isn’t going to grant a trade wish unless the Sixers are receiving ideal value in return.
The Clippers don’t intend to part ways with Kawhi Leonard or Paul George. While they have some young high-ceiling prospects that could move the needle, the Clippers are reportedly only interested in dealing away veteran role players for Harden.
Los Angeles’ offer doesn’t seem to be nearing Morey’s asking price for Harden. Now, we’re left with stalled talks for the time being. While the Sixers seem to hope Harden changes his mind and suits up for them when the season rolls around, nothing has changed at this time.
