James Harden Sends Another Clear Message to Sixers
Earlier this week, two NBA insiders mentioned that James Harden’s short-lived rant about Philadelphia 76ers President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey was likely only the beginning of his plan to force his way out of Philly.
For the first time since referring to Morey as a “liar” and making it clear he wouldn’t play for an organization run by the Sixers’ President of Basketball Ops, Harden spoke out on his situation with the 76ers again. And the message got his point across once more.
“I’ve been patient all summer,” Harden told KHOU11’s Jason Bristol. “For me, it’s just focus on what I can control and getting ready for this season.”
When Harden was asked whether he believed the relationship was beyond repair or not, the star guard made it known he felt that was the case at this point.
Time doesn’t seem to be healing the situation between Harden and the Sixers this summer. Going into the offseason, Daryl Morey publicly made it known the Sixers wanted Harden back. While that seems to remain the case, as the Sixers reportedly shut down trade talks and would like to have Harden on board for the start of the 2023-2024 NBA season, Harden had a change of heart this summer.
Although the veteran guard picked up his player option for $35 million, Harden followed up the move with a trade request. By now, it’s clear that Harden would like to join forces with Paul George and Kawhi Leonard out West with the Los Angeles Clippers.
However, the Sixers don’t want to sell while Harden’s value is low. Understandably, Morey and the Sixers aren’t interested in talking shop with the Clippers, as Los Angeles hasn’t come close to meeting the Sixers’ asking price.
The situation is sticky for all parties involved. As much as the Sixers would be open to trading Harden, they don’t want to sell much lower than desired. And while Harden seems willing to push his tactics to the limits and could potentially hold out, the CBA puts him in a tough spot later on down the line.
A lot can change over time, but the Harden-Sixers saga doesn’t seem to be taking any different turns anytime soon.
