This isn’t the way the Philadelphia 76ers wanted it, but there’s no turning back now.

Despite beginning the 2023-2024 NBA season as one of the Eastern Conference’s hottest teams, the Sixers were faced with a difficult challenge in early February.

The veteran center, Joel Embiid, went down with a meniscus injury. After opting for surgery, Embiid spent eight weeks off the court. Facing opponents without Embiid a handful of times prior to the major knee injury, the Sixers struggled to find success.

When they lost Embiid for a long stretch, they found it difficult to overcome the absence. The Sixers wrapped up the regular season by winning just 37 percent of their games in Embiid’s absence. After sliding down the Eastern Conference standings throughout the second half of the season, the 76ers found themselves in the NBA Play-In Tournament for the first time.

On Wednesday night, the Miami Heat are set to take on the Sixers in South Philly. As expected, both teams had quite a few notable names on the injury report. The Sixers’ included Embiid, who missed the team’s season finale, despite returning for the final two weeks of action during the regular season.
