NBA Insider Lists 76ers Among Potential Suitors for Spencer Dinwiddie

With Spencer Dinwiddie hitting the open market, the 76ers are expected to show interest.

With the 2024 trade deadline in the rearview, the NBA’s buyout market is beginning to form. Although the Philadelphia 76ers were extremely active, making four trades, they are expected to be productive in the free agency market as well.

One popular name linked to the Sixers is Charlotte Hornets guard Kyle Lowry. While the veteran guard hasn’t reached a buyout with Charlotte just yet, the league-wide expectation is that he could become available any day now.

The connection between Lowry and the Sixers is simple to point out. He’s a Philly native who has generated interest from the 76ers’ front office dating back to his final days with the Toronto Raptors. Plus, he played for 76ers head coach Nick Nurse while in Toronto.

Lowry isn’t the only veteran guard that’s rumored to be on the 76ers’ radar at this time. According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, former Brooklyn Nets guard Spencer Dinwiddie could be a ball-handler the 76ers consider picking up.

As the hoops world waits for Charlotte’s final decision regarding Lowry, Dinwiddie is set to hit the free agency market after getting moved in a deadline deal on Thursday. The veteran guard was swapped with Dennis Schroder, landing on the Toronto Raptors temporarily.

Per Charania, Dinwiddie is expected to generate interest from the Los Angeles Lakers, Dallas Mavericks, New Orleans Pelicans, and the Sixers, per Bleacher Report.

The 76ers have seen plenty of Dinwiddie in the past. As he’s spent most of his career playing for their Atlantic Division rival out in Brooklyn, along with stints in Detroit, Washington, and Dallas, Dinwiddie has had 24 matchups against the 76ers throughout his career.

In those games, Dinwiddie averaged 16 points, six assists, and four rebounds.

Landing a backup guard was a priority for the 76ers heading into the trade deadline. While they snagged Cameron Payne from the Milwaukee Bucks, they also subtracted a member of their backcourt by sending Patrick Beverley to the Eastern Conference contenders in order to help land Payne.

Dinwiddie might’ve been a full-time starter for the Nets over the previous two seasons, but a role off the bench could be suitable for him in Philadelphia. While that might be a route the Sixers consider taking, it won’t be easy to land his services. Dinwiddie exits Brooklyn, averaging 13 points, six assists, and three rebounds.
