Sixers Buyout Watch: Magic Releasing Terrence Ross, Mavs in Play

The Orlando Magic are buying out Terrence Ross. Could the Sixers join the race against the Mavericks to try and sign him?

Another veteran is set to hit the buyout market from the Orlando Magic. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Magic are finalizing a contract buyout for the veteran Terrence Ross. After Orlando failed to find a trade to move on from Ross, he’ll have an opportunity to move on and sign elsewhere.

The Philadelphia 76ers are expected to be active in the buyout market. While they did strike a deal before the trade market closed, acquiring Charlotte Hornets wing Jalen McDaniels, Sixers’ President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey made it clear that multiple prospects could be brought on via the buyout market.

Coming out of a rebuilding situation in Orlando, Ross is in play for any team that requires a guard/forward ahead of their playoff run. This season, Ross appeared in 42 games, averaging 23 minutes on the court. During that time, he put up eight points per game while shooting 43 percent from the field and knocking down 38 percent of his threes, taking four attempts per game.

Ross had appeared in the playoffs in five different seasons, three times with the Toronto Raptors and twice with the Magic. His last playoff run in 2019-2020 lasted five games. He averaged a playoff career-high of 16 points while shooting 33 percent from three.

The Sixers replaced one wing with another by swapping out Matisse Thybulle for Jalen McDaniels. While the backup five spot seems like the top priority for Philadelphia in the buyout market, Ross might be a player to keep an eye on, as he’s already gaining traction.

Per Wojnarowski, the Dallas Mavericks are eyeing up Ross and have reportedly emerged as the frontrunners to land him.
