Sixers’ Mac McClung Patiently Waiting Turn To Prove He Belongs

Mac McClung wants to make in the NBA, but he knows his time hasn't come just yet.
In this story:

Despite playing just two games in the NBA through his sophomore effort in the pros, Mac McClung is currently one of the most popular players in the NBA. As the young guard represented the Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA’s Slam Dunk Contest over the weekend, McClung shocked the world as he dominated the competition and made Sixers history by taking home the hardware.

A few nights later, he was back in a G League setting in Wilmington, Delaware, playing for the Sixers’ G League affiliate, the Delaware Blue Coats. All season long, McClung has found success in the G League. The reigning Rookie of the Year has already proven he has what it takes to dominate at the developmental level. Now, he’s working on the next phase of his career.

“I want to be in the NBA,” McClung said following his Wednesday night matchup against the Motor City Cruise. “I want to make an impact. You know, can't have nights like tonight, but I’m just waiting my turn, and I don't know, I can control what I can control. That's about it.”

With the last few days catching up to him, McClung struggled in his return to the floor as he shot 2-9 from the field, scoring seven points in 24 minutes. As he noted, Wednesday was not one of McClung’s typical performances. This season, the young guard has averaged 18 points and five assists while hitting on 56 percent of his shots and 49 percent of his threes.

With McClung wanting to take the next step and carve out a role for himself at the highest level, what does he need to do?

“There's definitely a constant improvement,” McClung said. “Tonight on both sides of the ball, defense, offense. I think it's easy to say like, ‘Oh if I get better at this, I get a chance.’ But a lot of it's just waiting your turn. Like, I really haven't had a turn yet. You know what I mean?"

Patience is key for the 24-year-old. While McClung landed NBA contracts with two different organizations last season, including a ten-day deal with the Chicago Bulls and a two-way deal with the Los Angeles Lakers, McClung hardly had an opportunity to prove anything as he averaged 12 minutes on the court in two games.

So far, McClung has yet to get called up from the Sixers since he signed a two-way contract with them heading into the All-Star break. With the backcourt crowded in Philly, there aren’t many opportunities available for McClung at the moment. But when his time comes, he’s more than ready.

“When I have that turn, I believe I'll make the most of it,” McClung finished.
