Tyrese Maxey's Performance vs. Nets Puts Him in Star Company
Over the weekend, the Philadelphia 76ers had a matinee matchup against the Brooklyn Nets. They were able to secure a blowout victory, in large part due to the play of their two stars.
Similar to how they've done all year, Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey led the charge for the Sixers in their win over the Nets. Embiid nearly notched a triple-double while Maxey put himself in some elite guard company.
In 36 minutes of action, Maxey posted 25 points, two rebounds, and 10 assists. He also shot a stellar 54.5% from beyond the arc, knocking down six of his 11 attempts.
With this performance, Maxey became one of three guards to achieve this stat line in a game this season. The other two are All-Stars Luka Doncic and Tyrese Haliburton.
Due to the James Harden saga, Maxey was thrust into the starting point guard position while also being the No. 2 option to Embiid. The young guard was already developing at a rapid pace but is in the process of emerging into a star-level talent.
Through the Sixers' first 13 games, Maxey is averaging 26.8 PPG, 4.8 RPG, and 7.1 APG (all career highs). He's managed to increase his production while also maintaining his efficiency. Currently, Maxey is shooting 44.6% from beyond the arc on close to eight attempts per game.
By far the biggest leap in Maxey's game this season is his playmaking. He'd already proven he can score at a high rate, but now is showing he can run an offense as well. Sunday's performance marked the fourth time he'd broken double-digit assists in 13 matchups.
Through the first month of the season, Maxey is playing like one of the top guards in the NBA. This breakout season has him in All-Star and All-NBA debates and is setting him up for a lucrative payday when free agency rolls around.
