Watch: 76ers Mob Joel Embiid in Locker Room Following Career-High
The biggest story in the NBA Monday night was Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid. Along with leading his team to a 133-123 win over the San Antonio Spurs, he achieved a historic feat.
In just 36 minutes of action, Embiid became the ninth player in NBA history to record 70 points in a single game. The All-Star center finished with a complete stat line of 70 points, 18 rebounds, and five assists.
This performance is a collection of new records for Embiid and the Sixers. Not only did he set a new career high, but it is the new single-game high in franchise history. Wilt Chamberlain previously held the record with 68. His 100-point game was as a member of the Philadelphia Warriors.
After the game, the Sixers made sure to celebrate this historic outing in a big way. Tyrese Maxey posted a video on his Instagram of the team bombarding him in the locker room after finishing up his postgame interview.
Embiid has been one of the NBA's most dominant forces this season, and this performance is a testament to that. His 70-point barrage is the most points scored by an NBA player this season. The previous high was 64 by Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo.
The Sixers star joined multiple historic lists following this dominant performance against the Spurs. Along with joining the group of players to score 70+, he is in exclusive company with Michael Jordan due to an extremely rare stat line.
What made this outing so special was all the outside factors contributing to it. For starters, longtime Sixers coach Brett Brown was on the Spurs' bench to witness this outing. On top of that, it came on the anniversary of when Kobe Bryant scored 81 points in a game. Embiid was heavily by Kobe and even shouted him out in his Instagram post following his performance.
