Over the weekend, the Charlotte Hornets made their final call on Kyle Lowry. After setting a timeline to reach a conclusion on the guard’s future with the franchise after landing him from the Miami Heat, the Hornets made the expected move to work on a buyout with Lowry.

As soon as it became clear Lowry was set to become a free agent, his next move was immediately revealed; the veteran was coming home to join the Philadelphia 76ers.

When Can Lowry Officially Sign?

Since the news broke about Lowry’s next destination, the Sixers traveled to Ohio to pay a visit to the Cleveland Cavaliers. As expected, Lowry was not with the team just yet.

On Tuesday afternoon, Lowry is set to clear NBA waivers. That’s when he’s free to make his next move official.

Barring any surprising changes, Lowry is set to become the newest member of the 76ers. He’ll suit up for his hometown team for the first time in his 18-year career.

Who’s Next for Philadelphia?

Since the Sixers’ star center, Joel Embiid, went down with a critical injury, the Sixers continued to slide down the Eastern Conference standings with a losing skid. Prior to their victory over the Washington Wizards this past Saturday night, the Sixers lost four-straight and dropped eight of their last ten.

When the Sixers fired up a two-game road trip beginning in DC, they cranked out a six-point win over the Wizards to snap the streak. On Monday, they went toe-to-toe with the Cavaliers and pulled off a gutsy win to make it two in a row.

On Wednesday, the Sixers return to their home court for a battle against Lowry’s recent former squad, the Miami Heat. Right now, it’s unclear if the veteran guard will be around the team by then or not.

While Lowry’s a new addition, he’s familiar with head coach Nick Nurse, which could make the transition from the Heat to the Sixers much easier for him compared to others. Soon, the Sixers should get a first look at the Philadelphia native in his new threads, offering them a helping hand as they work on getting healthier.
