Giannis Antetokounmpo, the star forward of the Milwaukee Bucks, is one of the league’s top scorers through Week 8 of the 2023-24 NBA season.

After eight weeks of competition, the Greek Freak emerged as the league’s third-leading scorer with 31.4 points a game.

The Philadelphia Sixers’ Joel Embiid is the league’s top scorer with 34.2 points per contest and is followed by the Dallas Mavericks’ Luka Doncic, who is good for 32.7 points a game. Rounding up the Top 5 scores are the Oklahoma City Thunder’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (30.7) and the Phoenix Suns’ Kevin Durant (30.6).

Explosive week for Antetokounmpo

Giannis’ rise to the scoring ranking was sparked by an explosive performance last week that saw him average 36.0 points, 12.8 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 1.8 steals in a four-game stretch.

The Bucks went undefeated in that four-game period, highlighted by Giannis’ 64-point explosion in a 140-126 win over the Indiana Pacers. The stellar four-game run also enabled Antetokounmpo to win his first Player of the Week honor this season.

Giannis, Joel in a tight race for MVP anew?

Antetokounmpo was a top contender for the Most Valuable Player (MVP) last season but eventually lost the prestigious accolade to Embiid.

Embiid got the award after getting 73 first-place votes, followed by Nikola Jokic of the Denver Nuggets with 15 first-place votes. Giannis was third with 12 first-place votes.

At the rate things are going, Giannis and Joel are expected to figure prominently once more in the MVP race. Milwaukee is currently second in the Eastern Conference with a 20-7 record, while Philadelphia is third with an 18-8 slate.

Giannis shows off his passing skills by registering a career-high 16 assists vs. San Antonio
