Giannis Antetokounmpo wins the PBWA's 2022-23 Magic Johnson Award
Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo has captured the 2022-23 Magic Johnson Award. The award, which is given by the Professional Basketball Writers Association, gives honor to an NBA player who displays excellence on the hardcourt and in his interactions with the working media.
Gracious interviewee
Throughout his career, the Greek Freak has established a reputation for being a gracious interviewee. He is known to answer questions thoughtfully and with detail, often giving insight into his game or his feelings on certain topics.
“Off the court, Antetokounmpo consistently fostered an atmosphere of mutual respect and openness with reporters who cover the NBA,” said the PWBA of their decision to award Giannis with the prestigious plum.
The award was created in 2001 and was named after Los Angeles Lakers legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson, who consistently showed professionalism and respect to the media throughout his playing career.
Oncourt greatness
Giannis’ savviness with the media is also matched by his incredible production on the floor. Although the Bucks failed to get past the first round, Giannis still had a phenomenal season, averaging 31.1 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 5.7 assists per game to lead his team to an NBA-best 58-24 record.
Giannis beat out four finalists for the award, namely DeMar DeRozan, Kevin Durant, Damian Lillard, and Donovan Mitchell.
The PBWA is composed of more than 200 writers and editors who cover the NBA regularly for newspapers, magazines, and online news outlets.
