Milwaukee Bucks coach Adrian Griffin says he and Giannis Antetokounmpo are on the same page
Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo has put the franchise on its toes in a recent interview with the New York Times, saying he’s taking a patient approach to evaluating the team’s performance before deciding on a contract extension two seasons from now.
In that interview, the “Greek Freak” also mentioned new head coach Adrian Griffin as a major factor in his decision, as he also has to see how the team does under the latter’s guidance.
Speaking at a golf event for the Milwaukee Bucks Foundation, Griffin said he and Antetokounmpo are on the same page regarding the team's goals for this upcoming season.
“Giannis and I are on the same page,” Griffin said.
Great relationship
Giannis and the Bucks’ previous head coach Mike Budenholzer, shared a solid bond, one that withstood numerous playoff runs and many great moments. Griffin is looking to build on that strong connection to ensure the team’s success in the future, as he believes it’s essential in helping Antetokounmpo reach his goals.
“We have a great relationship so far. He’s been pleasant to get to know. He wants to win, and I want to win. It’s that simple. I respect him. I respect what he’s accomplished in this league. We’re here together to win. I have no problem with that. I think it’s a great partnership. We’re going to lead the team together. When he leads, the others will follow. I think it’s great,” Griffin added.
Competitive fire
While Giannis is known to be one of the most low-key superstars in the NBA, his competitive fire burns deep. Griffin has seen this firsthand and is confident that Antetokounmpo will take the Bucks back to the league’s mountaintop with help from a solid cast led by Khris Middleton, Jrue Holiday, and Brook Lopez.
Although Middleton and Giannis are coming off knee procedures this offseason, Griffin reported that both are expected to be at the start of training camp next month.
“That’s the plan,” Griffin said. “They’ve been working their butts off in the gym every day and just grinding. I think the most important thing is to just take it day by day. That’s what they’re doing. It’s been terrific.”
