According to a report by The Athletic, Adrian Griffin, a former assistant coach at the Toronto Raptors, will sign a multiyear contract that will pay him over $4 million per year.

The hiring was not officially announced yet, but Griffin has already started his coaching duties by scouting possible assistants, the report added.

Veteran coaches on the radar

Shams Charania and Eric Nehm of the Athletic reported that among those being considered as Griffin assistants are Terry Stotts and James Borrego.

Stotts was a second-round selection in the 1980 draft. His coaching career started in 1990 when he was named as an assistant to George Karl with the Albany Patroons in the CBA.

In 2002, Stotts moved to the Atlanta Hawks also as an assistant but was promoted to head coach when Lon Kruger got fired 27 games into the season.

Stotts was eventually dismissed by the Hawks and later joined the Golden State Warriors as an assistant coach. From Golden State, Terry transferred to the Bucks in 2005 as head coach. He led the Bucks to the playoffs in his first season but was fired toward the end of his second season in March 2007.

In 2008, Stotts was hired as an assistant of Rick Carlisle at the Dallas Mavericks. Terry was part of the Dallas team that won the NBA title in the 2010-2011 season. Stotts was then hired as head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers in August 2012. He spent the most memorable part of his coaching career there, as he and the Blazers mutually agreed to part ways in June 2021 after nine years.

Well-traveled coach

Just like Stotts, Borrego has various stints with several NBA teams as a bench tactician.

Borrego started as a video coordinator with the San Antonio Spurs and was promoted to assistant coach in 2003. James also served as an assistant coach for the New Orleans Hornets and Orlando Magic from 2010-2012 and 2012-2015, respectively.

Borrego made the breakthrough when he was named as an interim head coach of the Magic when Jacque Vaughn was fired in February 2015. But still, in June 2015, Borrego returned to the Spurs as an assistant of Gregg Popovich.

In May 2018, Borrego signed a four-year deal as head coach of the Charlotte Hornets but was fired in April 2022, as he has been a free agent ever since.
