Sidney Dobner is dialed in as the new assistant coach of the Milwaukee Bucks - "I just want to do my job. I just want to be good at coaching basketball."
Sidney Dobner is aware of the barrier she’s broken when she was promoted to assistant coach of the Milwaukee Bucks in the new coaching staff of Adrian Griffin. As appreciative as she is of the opportunity, Dobner is keeping her eyes on the goal: to help the Bucks win the NBA title once again. To that end, Dobner knows her role and responsibilities and intends to carry those out to the best of her abilities.
"I just want to do my job. I just want to be good at coaching basketball," said Dobner in a talk with Spectrum News.
Come a long way
Dobner is already in her sixth season with the Bucks, where she began as a video assistant/coaching associate with Milwaukee’s G League affiliate, Wisconsin Herd, in 2018. From there, she joined the Bucks as a basketball operations intern for the 2019-20 season before transitioning to a video and player development assistant for the 2020-21 season. She was bumped up to head video coordinator before the start of the 2022-2023 season. Upon learning of an opening within Griffin’s staff, Dobner didn’t hesitate to take a stab at it.
“There was an opening that happened to open up on our staff,” she said. “I reached out to Coach Griffin, shot my shot a little bit. The NBA moves fast, and sometimes you just got to take hold of your opportunity. Just presented the idea to him, and sounded like he was really on board. Next thing I knew, I was being announced as an assistant coach.”
Griffin is excited for Dobner
Griffin, who the Bucks hired to replace longtime coach Mike Budenholzer, did not mince words in describing Dobner’s addition to his staff.
“It’s probably my best hire, I’ll be honest with you,” Griffin said. “No disrespect to the other coaches. I had no idea she was going to be making history. We found out after the fact and kind of celebrated. I do want to say this. She earned it. Dobner has the respect of the players.”
On her end, Dobner relayed that it hasn’t all sunk in yet. And so, she just goes about what she’s done for the last few years: do her best work.
“Kind of just doesn’t feel real yet,” said Dobner. “I just want to do my job. I just want to be good at coaching basketball. I just want to help this team be better. At the end of the day, that’s what I’m thinking about.”
