The Chicago Bulls desperately need to retool their roster, starting with the point guard position, which has been in flux for the last season and a half. Ever since starter Lonzo Ball went down with a knee injury in January 2022, the Bulls have gone through numerous guard options, which included young guns Ayo Dosunmo and Coby White and veterans Alex Caruso and Pat Beverley. Based on this season’s results, it’s safe to say that none of these options have really worked out.

The Bulls need a reliable point guard to help stabilize their often-chaotic offense. Tyus Jones, the Washington Wizards guard who is entering the final year of his contract and looking for a full-time starting gig, fits the bill perfectly.

Looking to take the next step

The former Duke standout has been one of the NBA’s top reserve guards over the last two seasons, ably filling in as a starter whenever Ja Morant became unavailable, whether due to injury or disciplinary sanctions. In his four seasons in Memphis, Jones has proven more than capable of leading the Grizzlies, averaging 13.1 points, 7.1 assists, and 1.5 steals per game whenever he gets the starting nod.

Jones, though, was part of the blockbuster deal that sent him to Washington, Kristaps Porzingis to Boston, and Marcus Smart to Memphis. However, it appears he will not get the starting job he has been looking for with the Wizards, as there are three other point guards on the roster led by Chris Paul and Monte Morris.

Chicago can make a move

With the logjam at point guard, the Bulls could do well to give the Wizards a call and see if they can pry away Jones. The Bulls could use the addition of Jones to bolster their backcourt depth, as he is a savvy point guard who is capable of running an offense with patience and precision. He has shown time and again that he can be effective off the bench or even when given a full-time starting spot.
