The Chicago Bulls announced they have signed veteran big man Derrick Favors to a camp contract. This is an intriguing development, as the Bulls already have two traditional big men on their rotation—starter Nikola Vucevic and backup center Andre Drummond.

Another shot in the NBA

The burly big man was the third overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft, selected by the then-New Jersey Nets. However, he didn’t stay long with the Nets as he got traded during his rookie season to the Utah Jazz, where he had his best years. He played 10 seasons in Salt Lake City, averaging 11.4 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks per game.

After also playing in New Orleans and Oklahoma City, Favors was out of the league last season. He signed a 10-day contract with Atlanta but never got to play.

Other transactions

Aside from signing Favors, the team also signed hometown former Kentucky forward Kahlil Whitney. A 6-foot-6 power forward who grew up in Chicago, Whitney spent last season playing for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers in the G League.

The Bulls also waived guard Quenton Jackson. Though his time in Chicago was brief, Jackson left an indelible mark with this filthy in-your-face slam on the Milwaukee Bucks last week.
