The Chicago Bulls and guard Coby White could not agree on a contract extension. This is a bit of a surprise, as many people expected the Bulls to lock up their young talent long-term. The fact that they couldn't come to an agreement could set up an interesting season for White.

Soon-to-be unrestricted free agent

With this development, the 22-year-old will become an unrestricted free agent next season, putting the Bulls in a tough spot. They will need to decide if they want to commit long-term to White, who has shown potential as an off-the-bench scorer and playmaker. He is still an unfinished product, and there are questions about his defense and consistency, but he has some upside.

At the same time, Chicago will also need to consider other options available in free agency and on the trade market. Plenty of good players will be looking for new deals next summer, so they may decide it's better to move on from White if they can't get him on a reasonable contract.

Focused on the season ahead

History has shown how contract negotiations, or lack thereof, can be a distraction for players, and the Bulls will need to be careful not to let that happen with White. He has remained focused and committed throughout this process, and it's clear that he is only concerned about having a great season for Chicago.

"I just play basketball, bro. I'm just looking at it as another season. Come in, help my team. We're really focused on winning here, going to the second round of the playoffs, and so on," said White in training camp. "Whatever I can do to help my team do that, that's all I care about. And I believe everything else will take care of itself."

The University of North Carolina product was picked seventh in the 2019 NBA Draft. He has shown commendable flexibility during his time with the Bulls, starting his career as an off-the-bench scorer before assuming the starting role in the 2020-2021 season. However, he was relegated to the bench once again with the arrival of Lonzo Ball and Alex Caruso.

White will remain in a reserve role this season and compete for minutes in a crowded backcourt with Goran Dragic and rookie Dalen Terry. But with his immense talent and potential, there's no doubt that the 22-year-old will continue to make an impact for the Bulls in this contract year.
