Coby White quietly turned a corner during the 2022-2023 season, showing critical improvements in his playmaking and defense, paving the way for the Chicago Bulls to re-sign him to a three-year, $36-million contract. With next season getting closer and Lonzo Ball not expected to play at all for the foreseeable future, White has a clear chance at earning the starting position come training camp. He recently showed glimpses of his further improvement in the Sonny Parker Unity Classic, where he played two spectacular games, including a 51-point masterpiece.

41 points in the finale

Though White and his Team Succezz squad fell to Jabari Parker’s Team Irvin in the finals with a score of 107-103, White showed how ready he was for the new season, dropping 41 points. It was a fitting performance for the 23-year-old guard, who has been making a lot of noise lately. Aside from his new contract, White also appears ready to grow his roots in the city as he bought a massive 7,000-square-foot house inside the swanky Lincoln Park.

The tournament attracted participants ranging from sixth graders to high schoolers and even beyond. It was an open event, inviting families and community members to gather and celebrate their mutual love for the game in a safe and welcoming environment.

Best point guard option

While Jevon Carter and Ayo Dosunmu bring plenty of bits and pieces to the table, Coby White is arguably the best point guard option on the roster. Not only does he possess much-improved shooting skills, but his passing and court vision make him an effective playmaker as well. His size (6’5”) also gives him an edge on the defensive end of the court, where he can disrupt opposing players and play the passing lanes well.

While nothing is guaranteed until training camp ends, the Bulls would be wise to give Coby White the starting nod and see what he can do with his newfound opportunity.
