After a prolonged wait, athletic forward Derrick Jones Jr. has finally found a new home after signing with the Dallas Mavericks on a one-year deal. Back in June, the former slam dunk champion opted out of the second year of his two-year pact with the Chicago Bulls to become an unrestricted free agent. However, that move failed to pay dividends as the market—up until this week—was virtually non-existent for Jones' services.

The Mavericks, who have now put together a roster that may make some noise in the Western Conference, decided to gamble on the 26-year-old forward and offer him an opportunity to prove himself. Jones Jr., who has already built up a strong reputation as one of the premier dunkers in the game, should help improve the Mavericks' defense.

Young and athletic

While it may seem like the high-flyer has been around for a while now, Jones is still a young forward with unfulfilled potential heading to his eighth season in the league. Playing for his fifth team now, Jones has carved out a role as a "3-and-D" guy whose shooting leaves a lot to be desired.

His defense, though, is his calling card. Jones has the ability to guard multiple positions on the floor, using his athleticism and frame - he is listed at 6-foot-6 and 210 pounds - to be a pest for opponents. Still, while Jones brings plenty of defensive upside, his offensive game needs more work. He shot only 33 percent from three-point land last season for the Bulls and a ghastly 30 percent for his career.

Fit with the Mavericks

The Mavs headed to the offseason with the goal of providing superstars Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving with more help. Aside from Jones, Dallas also acquired former Boston Celtics forward Grant Williams, who should provide tough defense and timely outside shooting, which will help space the floor for the stars. Even though Jones isn't necessarily an immediate threat in the scoring department, he should be able to make a meaningful impact on both ends of the floor with his defensive prowess and athleticism.
