Does DeMar DeRozan have a future with the Chicago Bulls?
When DeMar DeRozan joined the Chicago Bulls, fans immediately started dreaming of a brighter future, but it is unclear if he will stay with the team beyond this season. His arrival, coupled with the superb play of point guard Lonzo Ball, elevated the Bulls to the top of the Eastern Conference.
However, since Ball went down with a knee injury, things have not been quite the same. Although DeRozan still put up stellar numbers last season, it wasn't enough to help the team get to a .500 record or reach the NBA Playoffs. Now, with Deebo set to play the final year of his contract, there are speculations about whether or not he has a place in the Bulls' plans for the future.
Wasted a stellar year
Showing he is as durable as ever, even at his advanced age, DeRozan played 74 games last season and produced another All-Star-worthy season that went to waste in the face of the Bulls' underachieving ways. Even with DeRozan playing his best, the Bulls went 40-42 and missed the postseason by a game. This should give the team's decision-makers pause before making a decision about retaining Deebo.
"A 40-42 season was a waste of another monster year from DeRozan, who averaged 24.5 points, 4.6 rebounds, 5.1 assists and shot 50.4 overall in another All-Star season. Having just turned 34 and entering the final year of his contract, however, it may be time to question DeRozan's future in the Windy City," Greg Swartz wrote.
Explore DeRozan's value
With DeRozan in the final year of his contract, the Bulls should do their due diligence to explore his value around the league. They could look to move him at the trade deadline or risk losing him for nothing when the free agency period arrives next year.
"Chicago should at least be exploring the trade market for DeRozan from contenders who could use his on-ball scoring and playmaking ability. He could also sign an extension with the Bulls, although doing so seemingly only locks this team into mediocrity even longer," Swartz added. "All options should be on the table for now, with a DeRozan trade possibly standing as the best option for all parties involved."
