Chicago Bulls guard Alex Caruso is a player a lot of teams covet. While he may not blow people away with massive stats, what he does on the floor almost always translates to winning. For that reason, the Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly interested in making a run at their former player.

The Lakers need a defensive edge

According to a report by Sean Deveney of Heavy.com, the Lakers’ brass feels the team lacks teeth on defense, especially on the perimeter. An Eastern Conference executive bared that with this in mind, the Lakers may be interested in swinging a deal to bring Caruso back to the City of Angels.

“The rumor around the Lakers was they regretted letting him go almost immediately after it happened," the unnamed exec reportedly said. "They knew that was a mistake. He's not the same player now, but the Lakers are worried they don't have enough of an edge. He could be someone who helps fix that.”

It makes sense that the Lakers would want Caruso given his history with the Lakers. The former Texas A&M star began his career with the Lakers in 2017, eventually becoming a key cog who helped the team win the NBA title in 2020. He then signed with the Bulls as a free agent in the summer of 2021.

Glue guy extraordinaire

For his career, Caruso is only averaging 6.0 points, 2.7 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.2 steals per game. However, what the stat sheet fails to show is Caruso’s impact on the court. He’s an incredibly tough and gritty defender who can guard multiple positions. Additionally, he has a knack for making the hustle plays that often go overlooked. His leadership and toughness have been praised by teammates, coaches, and fans alike.

The exec added that while Chicago may look to snag a first-round pick in exchange for Caruso, the Lakers may balk at such a proposition. However, the Lakers may be willing to part with some of their young players.

“They wouldn't give up a [first-round] pick but they could give up [Jalen] Hood-Schifino and another contract if they wait until December 15. Or Max Christie, he has some value,” the executive said.
