While prolific big man Pau Gasol had his shining moments with the Memphis Grizzlies and the Chicago Bulls, he will always be known for his time with the Los Angeles Lakers, where he and the late great Kobe Bryant won two NBA championships. The Spaniard was recently inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame, and he talked about one of the first moments he and Kobe shared as teammates.

Late-night talk

It was February 2008 when Gasol was traded from the Grizzlies to the Lakers for a haul consisting of Kwame Brown, Javaris Crittenton, Aaron McKie, the draft rights to Marc Gasol, and two future first-round picks. Gasol shared that the Lakers had a game in Washington, and he arrived at the hotel in the early hours of the morning. Despite the ungodly hour, Kobe was keen on welcoming the newest Laker and met Gasol in his room.

"He made sure that right away, firsthand, I got the message," Gasol shared. "He said, 'Welcome to the team. I'm happy you're here. Now let's go win a championship together.' I said, 'Alright I'm in, man. I'm in. Have a good night.' That was it. No crap. Straight to the chase."

Fruitful partnership

Gasol had a truly special time in Los Angeles. Aside from the two championships and the three All-Star appearances, he forged a bond with Bryant that was unlike any other. The two teammates had an incredible level of chemistry that resulted in a deep connection. Bryant went out of his way to make Gasol feel comfortable, and Pau was always willing to do whatever it took for the team. After Kobe's untimely passing in 2020, Gasol spoke fondly of the relationship they had plenty of times.

"I wouldn't be here without you, brother. I wish more than anything that you and Gigi were here today with us. I miss you and love you," Pau added.
