Report cites Jevon Carter signing as the biggest win of the offseason for the Chicago Bulls
Heading into the offseason, one of the biggest needs for the Chicago Bulls was a point guard. With Lonzo Ball missing another season due to his knee issues, the Bulls needed a court general who can consistently hit outside shots and defend. Jevon Carter checks both boxes, and a report calls this move by the Bulls the team’s biggest win of the offseason.
Complements the stars
In DeMar DeRozan and Zach LaVine, the Bulls already have two dominant players who need the ball in their hands to be successful. Carter is the perfect complimentary player who can operate away from the ball and knock down open shots when needed. His ability to pressure opposing guards on defense—at times over the full length of the floor—is certainly a welcome addition for a team that needs help on that end of the court.
“The veteran point guard is the perfect complement to stars with his defense, three-point shooting and ability to play on or off the ball,” Greg Swartz of Bleacher Report wrote.
“Chicago was smart to add him to a backcourt that will once again be without Lonzo Ball, as Carter can start at point guard or be a key rotation player off the bench to mix and match with guys like Zach LaVine, DeMar DeRozan and Alex Caruso,” Swartz added.
Capable replacement
The Bulls did lose fiery guard Patrick Beverley, who signed with the Philadelphia 76ers. The veteran guard was credited for sparking the team towards the latter part of the regular season, helping to push the Bulls to the Play-in tournament, where they nearly knocked off the Miami Heat for the final ticket to the NBA Playoffs.
However, having Carter more than offsets Beverley’s loss.
“While the Bulls played better and nearly knocked off the Miami Heat in the play-in tournament after signing Beverley mid-season, Chicago was statistically worse (minus-8.0 points per 100 possessions, per Cleaning the Glass) with the veteran guard on the floor,” Swartz commented. “Overall, swapping Beverley for Carter was an upgrade for the Bulls this offseason.”
