Why Ayo Dosunmu is the Bulls’ X-factor

Ayo Dosunmu has become a crucial player for the Bulls this season.

The Chicago Bulls are still in the middle of uncertain times, but the team and their fans can both take comfort in Ayo Dosunmu, who's growing as a player this season. Dosunmu started 40 games last season and rushed many of his shots and passes. He was a rookie, so his eagerness to contribute was understandable, but no one can deny that it led to erratic play.

Dosunmu did show flashes of brilliance on the defensive end of the court. His build is solid, and he isn't afraid of going after bigger players. He also displayed a will to defend in transition, becoming an annoying player to face.

Dosunmu's goal

This season, Dosunmu is taking the next steps in his evolution, showing how important he can be for the Bulls. Dosunmu is averaging 12.5 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 3.2 assists in 30 minutes over six games, shooting 50.8% from the field and displaying more poise.

The second-year point guard is no longer in a rush to get things done when he's in control of the basketball, and he had a season-high 22 points with six rebounds and two assists on 9-of-10 shooting and 4-of-4 from three-point range in 34 minutes in a 120-102 home win against the Celtics on October 24.

According to Darnell Mayberry of The Athletic:

"A goal for Dosunmu, even if he won't say it publicly, should be to seize control of the starting point guard job for however long Ball is out. No matter how the Bulls might slice it, it would be a disappointment if Dosunmu is supplanted by a veteran teammate."

Dosunmu's importance to the Bulls

Dosunmu often plays next to Alex Caruso in the backcourt. They're a fearsome duo of defensive guards, but Caruso has been a bit injury-prone in the past, increasing Dosunmu's importance.

Dosunmu's absence was felt on Saturday's 114-109 home loss against the 76ers. Dosunmu missed that game with a thoracic contusion, and the defense suffered.

At only 23 years old, Dosunmu has a very bright future. Dosunmu is already a crucial player for the Bulls, and if he keeps playing well, he can enter the conversation for the Most Improved Player of the Year award.
