Is there still room for Ayo on the Bulls?

Although the Chicago Bulls have definitively addressed most of the questions surrounding their off-season, one question remains unanswered: what will happen to point guard Ayo Dosunmu? As a restricted free agent, Dosunmu is still unsigned this late into the free agency period, which leads to questions about his future in Chicago.

Is there still room?

The Bulls got busy as soon as the free agency period began, locking Coby White up to a new deal and signing another guard in Jevon Carter. Although starting point guard Lonzo Ball will not be playing in the upcoming season, the Bulls—which also has defensive ace Alex Caruso—already have a number of guards on the roster. Bulls insider K.C. Johnson said this could become a tough juggling act if the Bulls decide to bring Dosunmu back.

“Even if Dosunmu does return, he’s projected to be the fifth guard behind Zach LaVine, Carter, White and Caruso,” Johnson wrote.

A dependable guard

Dosunmu is a 23-year-old guard who, in two seasons, has already proven he can be a dependable guard at this level. Although his outside shot remains a work in progress, the former Illinois guard boasts of solid averages of 8.7 points on 50 percent shooting, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game across 157 games, 91 of which he started.

However, with the number of backcourt options the Bulls have, Dosunmu may not receive the minutes or the opportunities to develop his skills and further his career. As it is, the Bulls have extended a qualifying offer, which means they can wait and see if he receives an offer sheet from another team before making a decision on his future. Regardless of the outcome, Dosunmu will be an interesting name to keep an eye on this offseason, as he could end up being a valuable rotation piece for the Bulls or another team in the near future.
