Report says shoes Michael Jordan wore in the 1998 NBA Finals could fetch a historic price
Memorabilia from the glory days of Michael Jordan continue to be prized, and a pair of Air Jordan 13s that he wore in the 1998 NBA Finals may be the most sought-after item of all. According to a report, the shoes could fetch an unprecedented price, ranging anywhere from $2 to $4 million, in a Sotheby’s auction.
The Last Dance
Jordan wore the sneakers in Game 2 of the NBA Finals against the Utah Jazz, where he scored 37 points to help the Chicago Bulls even the series up with a 93-88 victory. Jordan then signed the pair and gave them to a ball boy who was working in the visiting team’s locker room. The pair holds special significance since it was worn during Jordan’s final season with the Bulls, covered by the popular documentary “The Last Dance.”
Jordan and the Bulls went on to defeat the Jazz in six games to win their sixth NBA title and complete a second “three-peat.”
Hot item
Jordan memorabilia has always been coveted by collectors and fans across the world. A few years ago, a pair of Jordan’s Air Ships sold for $1.472 million. The Jordan 13 pair that will be available for auction online beginning on April 3, remains in immaculate condition, says Brahm Wachter, Sotheby’s head of streetwear and modern collectibles.
“Michael Jordan game-worn sports memorabilia has proven time and time again to be the most elite and coveted items on the market,” Wachter said.
The most expensive Jordan memorabilia ever sold was a jersey he wore also during the 1998 NBA Finals. That particular item fetched a whopping $10.1 million.
