Breaking Down Cavaliers’ 2023-24 Season-Opening Point Guards
Yesterday, the Cleveland Cavaliers made their preseason roster cuts heading into the 2023-24 regular season.
Last season, the Cavaliers won 51 games and advanced to the first round of the NBA Playoffs. This offseason, the team made some roster moves hoping to build on last season’s performance.
With Cleveland’s first regular season game just three days away, here is a breakdown of the point guards on their season-opening roster.
Darius Garland
The 2022 All-Star is set to once again be the team’s floor general this season. At just 23 years old, Darius Garland has become one of the premier point guards in the NBA, averaging over 21 points and seven assists per game in each of the last two seasons.
Ty Jerome
Signed to a two-year contract in free agency, Ty Jerome is entering his fifth NBA season. The 26-year-old has averaged seven points and nearly three assists per game so far in his career, primarily as a backup.
Craig Porter, Jr. (Two-Way Contract)
An undrafted free agent this season out of Wichita State, Craig Porter, Jr. is one of Cleveland’s three two-way players. The 23-year-old was a key part of the Cavaliers’ Summer League Championship team this offseason, averaging 12.0 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 5.3 assists per game.
In his senior collegiate season, the 6-foot-2 guard led Wichita State in rebounds (6.2), assists (4.9), steals (1.5), and blocks (1.5) per game, while also ranking second in scoring average (13.5 PPG).
Ricky Rubio
Ricky Rubio has averaged 9.2 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game in two seasons with Cleveland, mainly as a backup. However, in August, the 12-year NBA veteran stepped away from basketball to focus on his mental health, and remains away from the team indefinitely.
In our next Cavaliers roster breakdown, we’ll examine Cleveland's shooting guards.
