Donovan Mitchell Supports Cavaliers Teammate During 3-Point Contest
Donovan Mitchell took the floor in Indianapolis to participate in the NBA's Three-Point competition during All-Star weekend. Seeing him represent the Cleveland Cavaliers on one of the biggest stages in the sport was awesome to see. However, there was someone he especially wanted to highlight as the basketball world was watching him.
Spida took off his warmup and was wearing a throwback Cavaliers jersey which was a nostalgic sight for fans to see. But that wasn't even the best part. The number on Mitchell's back was "5" and the name under it said "Money Merrill." This was in reference to teammate Sam Merrill, whom Mitchell has campaigned to be a part of the three-point competition for weeks now.
Merrill has been a massive part of the Cavaliers recent 18-2 stretch. Cleveland has transformed itself into a heavy three-point shooting team and Merrill is a major part of that.
The sharpshooter is averaging 8.0 points per game while shooting 44.2% from behind the arc on 6.2 attempts per night. At one point, Merrill led the entire NBA in three-point attempts per 100 possessions. He's truly an elite three-point shooter and probably deserved to take part in this competition.
This was an incredible night to see for Cavaliers fans, especially as the rumors centered around Mitchell's future continue to circulate.
Unfortunately, the Merrill magic wasn't able to help Mitchell as he was eliminated in round one. Still, it was great to see him support his teammate who deserves more recognition for his contribution on the floor.
