Earlier this week when the Sacramento Kings visited the Cleveland Cavaliers, an old friend of the wine-and-gold spent his pre-game press conference reminiscing — but it wasn't about basketball.

Kings head coach Mike Brown, formerly with the Cavs in two separate stints, was all smiles while talking about his youngest son Cameron Brown with Associated Press reporter Tom Withers.

Cameron will be on the sidelines with the San Francisco 49ers on Super Bowl Sunday in Las Vegas as the team's defensive quality control coach.

As residents of Westlake, Withers and Mike coached youth sports together when the latter was with the Cavs at the time. And when Cameron was in high school, Withers coached him.

All of this had Mike going down memory lane on Monday prior to the Kings-Cavs matchup.

"I was at Lee Berneson [Middle School]. He was playing seventh-grade football. He liked it, but Cam was into books and a few other things," Brown said. "I'll never forget, he was dropped off at practice by (Mike's wife and Cam's mother) Carolyn and she asked me to pick him up on the way home because we were getting off a road trip.

"He'd lose his focus at practice every once in a while as a youngster. I walked up to practice and it was kinda getting late. They're on the field over there at Lee Berneson by the woods. I said, 'I'mma hide just to watch him.' They were scrimmaging. He was on defense. He played tackle or nose guard. They'd hike the ball, the offense is running, everybody's running."

Mike continued with his hilarious story.

"Cam's in his stance and then he'd stand up and kinda watch them running in his own world, wouldn't move. I came out, I was like, 'Cam! You've got to go after the ball!'

"Now, he's in the Super Bowl! He went from middle school, that, to the Super Bowl."

It clearly was a good coaching job by Mike, as Cameron ended up playing in college at Case Western Reserve University from 2016-2020 and had a decorated career for the Spartans with many milestone moments and achievements.

He moved on to become an assistant defensive line coach and linebackers coach at Case, then accepted a job as the 49ers' defensive quality control coach in 2023. This is his first season with San Francisco and in the NFL overall.

It's been an impressive debut campaign for Cameron Brown, who could be a Super Bowl LVIII champion at the end of the day if the Niners defeat the Kansas City Chiefs.
