Cavaliers Could Boost Point Guard Depth With This Trade
The Cleveland Cavaliers have been riddled with injuries to start the season. Darius Garland missed time, Donovan Mitchell and Ty Jerome remain out, and Ricky Rubio is still away from the team for personal reasons.
Cleveland needs to strengthen their guard depth if they want to remain one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference, and a solution to that issue just hit the market.
NBA Insider Sam Amico of Hoops Wire reported that point guard Tyus Jones is a name to watch for if the rebuilding Washington Wizards begin to trade away some of their assets.
Jones would be a great fit to add to Cleveland's roster.
He's a veteran guard playing in his ninth season and has a ton of experience. Jones is currently averaging 10.4 points, 4.7 assists, and 2.6 rebounds, while playing 26.7 minutes per game with the Wizards.
Jones is a solid defensive guard as well, which is something J.B. Bickersatff and the Cavs covet.
Funny enough, Jones was actually drafted by the Cavaliers 24th overall in the 2015 NBA Draft. He was immediately traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves, so he never had an opportunity to suit up for the Wine and Gold. But it's better late than never.
Yes, Craig Porter Jr. has recently broken out and is showing a lot of promise, and I think he can be the answer to Cleveland's backup point guard woes. However, he's still on a two-way deal, meaning he has a limited number of games with the NBA club, and also needs to prove he can produce over a longer period of time.
This factor, combined with the uncertainty surrounding Rubio and Jerome, means that Cleveland should still explore acquiring another point guard.
Jones is a logical fit for this team.
