The Celtics Should Trade for Lonnie Walker IV
The Boston Celtics bolstered their front court yesterday, adding defensive versatility in center/forward Xavier Tillman. Following the trade, league sources reported that Boston was not done ahead of Thursday's 3 p.m. trade deadline.
Of the many names mentioned of the Celtics' interest in continuing to upgrade their bench was swingman Lonnie Walker IV.
Walker, 25, is in the midst of a $2.3 million minimum contract with the Brooklyn Nets, averaging 12 points per game, shooting 47.6 percent from the field, and 43.6 percent from three in 18 minutes per game.
The Celtics could package their draft capital and the minimum contracts they have at the end of the roster.
The former Los Angeles Laker would give Boston backup-wing depth as a scoring shot creator behind Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum, accompanying other bench pieces like Sam Hauser and Oshae Brissett.
Another move may not be urgent for the Celtics after the acquisition of Tillman and how flexible the team has proven to be. Senior NBA reporter Jake Fischer stated Thursday morning that it sounds like Boston is done making moves ahead of 3 p.m., barring a surprise.
However, Boston has registered interest in Walker in previous years. C's ownership has expressed a desire to continue to add. If a deal is unable to get done in the next 20-30 minutes, the wing could still remain a target for the Celtics in the summer.
