LA Clippers Make Roster Move
With Eric Gordon's contract guarantee deadline at 9:00 PM PST on Wednesday night, the LA Clippers announced that the guard has been waived. It was reported by ESPN's Bobby Marks that the Clippers waiving Gordon will save them $110M in luxury tax money.
While the Clippers save money with this move, being unable to include Gordon in a trade is especially tough considering what they gave up to acquire him. Trading Luke Kennard and the pick swap that turned into Cam Whitmore, the Clippers invested a lot in Gordon just to waive him after 22 regular season games and one playoff series.
Gordon had a prominent role with the Clippers in his second stint with the organization, starting half of his regular season games in LA, and all five of his postseason games. The Clippers were brief in their announcement, stating the following:
"The LA Clippers have waived Eric Gordon. In his return to the Clippers last season, Gordon averaged 11.0 points and 2.1 assists in 22 appearances."
Trading Kennard and a pick swap for Gordon was something that was puzzling at the time it occurred, and looks even worse now for the Clippers. Kennard led the league in three-point percentage for the second-straight season, and was a fantastic fit next to Kawhi Leonard and Paul George.
It will be interesting to see which moves come next for the Clippers.
