Untold Story of NBA Legend's Hilarious Prank Revealed
Very few players in NBA history knew how to stir up trouble, on and off the court, the way Larry Bird knew how to. Just when you think you've heard every Larry Bird story, there's always another to tell.
On an episode of Podcast P, Clippers assistant coach Brian Shaw revealed a story from when he was a rookie on the Boston Celtics with Larry Bird. Shaw explained to Paul George about the time that Bird told him to go to the "best bar in Boston."
“As a rookie, we were staying at the Howard Johnsons Motel by Fenway Park," Shaw said. "And Larry came and got all the rookies that were trying out for the team and took us to dinner. So we’re sitting at dinner and we can’t believe Larry Bird is actually taking us out. And we said ‘Hey, you know where is it that we can go out down here in Boston tonight?’ And he said, ‘Go to the Ram Rod, it’s a club right across the street from the motel.’ Yeah, so the name right there, The Ram Rod, I’m like that don’t sound right. So we get back, you know, we wait until it’s gets a bit later and shit, come out the motel and across the street is the club. The Ram Rod. So we come out and it’s a long ass line waiting to get in. So we walk across the street, it’s dark out. It’s all dudes in black leather and motorcycles and sh*t but not one single woman. So we was like oh okay, he was trying to do us dirty. So when we got to practice the next day in training camp he was just cracking up.”
There aren't many players in NBA history who were capable of talking trash and causing trouble the way Larry Bird was capable of. There are an endless amount of stories from the 80s and 90s waiting to be told, and players like Larry Bird are always at the epicenter of it.
