2023 NBA Draft: Dallas Mavericks Official Selections and Draft Grades
The Mavericks had a disappointing season in 2022-23, but ultimately ended up landing the tenth overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, a highly coveted asset in what is regarded as one of the strong drafts in years.
With that asset, their options were to ship it off exchange for win-now veteran help around superstar Luka Doncic, or draft a prospect in hopes he adds both short and long-term value to the team. Regardless, in a loaded class, the tenth pick was sure to bring plenty of return.
Here’s how the Mavericks’ draft unfolded:
Selections
No. 12 (via Oklahoma City): Dereck Lively II
No. 24 (via Sacramento): Olivier-Maxence Prosper
Overall Draft Grade
B+
Draft Summary
Dallas had a good night, bolstering their defense across the board with the additions of Duke center Dereck Lively and Marquette forward Olivier-Maxence Prosper. Both of which should offer immediate versatility.
Lively felt like a bit of a reach with the tenth pick, leading to the grade of B-plus, but you can't fault the team for grabbing a prospect who should fill some holes for the team. Regardless, Dallas had one of the better drafts on the night, especially among teams looking to contend next season.
The addition of Richaun Holmes isn't included here, but should be noted and would likely bump Dallas' grade up.
