2023 NBA Summer League: Top Rookie Performers From July 7 Games

When looking back at the slate of games on July 7, these three rookies shined brightest in NBA Summer League.

Friday marked the opening of NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, as each of the top four picks from the 2023 NBA Draft took the floor throughout the day. Eight total games were played between two gyms on the campus of UCLA as NBA careers began for many incoming rookies.

Which three rookies were the top performers in yesterday’s slate of games?

Leonard Miller (Minnesota Timberwolves)

Leonard Miller, G League Ignite

16 Points | 11 Rebounds | 2 Steals

Although he was taken in the second round, many believed Miller had the talent to be taken in the middle portion of the first. After an entire season in the G League putting up productive numbers, his game appears to already be translating. While it may take some time for him to carve out a role in Minnesota, don’t be surprised if he ends up being one of the better players in this class.

Scoot Henderson (Portland Trail Blazers)

Scoot Henderson, Portland Trail Blazers

15 Points | 6 Assists | 5 Rebounds

As Portland’s future continues to remain unknown with Damian Lillard’s trade request, Henderson appears to be ready to take over the franchise if the opportunity presents itself. Though he left the contest early with a shoulder injury, he was one of the most productive players on the day in just 21 minutes. The shiftiness and athleticism was on full display, as well as the passing upside.

Amen Thompson (Houston Rockets)

Amen Thompson, Houston Rockets

16 Points | 5 Assists | 4 Rebounds

Thompson also left his debut game early with an apparent leg injury. It happened late in the fourth quarter just before Jabari Smith Jr. hit a game-winner with a fraction of a second remaining. It would make sense for his summer league to be over, but luckily he showcased tremendous upside on Friday that should leave fans feeling excited.
