2024 NBA Draft: Can Isaiah Collier Fix The Spurs?
The San Antonio Spurs are severely struggling this season as they currently have the second worst record in the NBA as they only have three wins and 17 losses. In the previous draft they won the luck of the draw and landed the number one overall pick and ended up with a generational talent in Victor Wembanyama. The 7-foot-4 big man has put up impressive numbers this season and is in the race to win the rookie of the year award as it’s neck and neck between him and Chet Holmgren.
The Spurs have a clear weakness on their roster and it’s at the point guard position but luckily for them there’s a very talented point guard in this year’s upcoming draft in Isaiah Collier. The Spurs have been doing an experiment by running Jeremy Sochan at the point guard position and it has been a rough experiment to say the least. The former Baylor prospect is a solid connector passer but never in his career has he initiated an offense so this is a big challenge for the second year player.
This can obviously improve Sochan’s ability to see the floor in a different way for whenever he gets moved back to his natural position which could end up being a very important skill for him moving forward. As far as the Spurs and Wembanyama are concerned, it’s clear they need a true floor general on this roster and Collier can fill them shoes. Some scouts believe that the point guard out of USC is the top pure passer and playmaker in the entire draft.
His court vision, high basketball IQ and feel for the game is off the charts. Collier has arguably been the most impactful freshman in college basketball as he’s averaging 17.3 points, 4.5 assists and three rebounds per game in a total of eight games played. The point guard position is easily the hardest position to learn and adjust to for young players when entering the NBA so if Collier was to end up in San Antonio, don’t expect immediate results.
When you do look at the bigger picture though, you can see that pairing a dynamic point guard like Collier could enable Wembanyama to reach his full offensive potential as he gets a point guard who knows how to create for teammates and initiate an offense. There’s still a lot of basketball to be played and ping pong balls to be dropped but it’s always nice to plan ahead on how a potential young duo could play out in the NBA.
