Is Ulrich Chomche Worth the Risk in 2024 NBA Draft?

The raw prospect out of NBA Academy Africa has tremendous upside, but could be a risky project.

There’s quite a bit of uncertainty surrounding the upcoming class of prospects in the 2024 NBA Draft. Not only is it unclear who will be the top pick in this summer’s event, but even the depth throughout could be relatively hit-and-miss.

One of the most mysterious prospects in this class is Ulrich Chomche out of Cameroon and NBA Academy Africa. The 6-foot-11 center officially declared for the 2024 NBA Draft today, which kicks off deeper evaluations for teams who now need to run further due diligence.

Not only is he an unknown given the sample of play against the competition he has gone up against, but reports out of Nike Hoops Summit last week suggest that Chomche may be more raw than initially expected. While he has tremendous upside, his game still has significant holes.

That’s not to say he can’t be a great NBA player one day, but it will likely take a team that can be patient and let him develop to a point in which he’s ready to contribute.

The 18-year-old projects to be an incredible rim protector and interior presence at some point, but will need to continue building upon his foundation and fundamental skills. Chomche moves well for his size and should be a versatile defender overall at the next level one day.

The offensive side of the ball is the real question for the young prospect. He is often turnover-prone and doesn't have many go-to moves, but can still serve as a lob threat and glass cleaner. If his jumper comes around as a more consistent weapon, that could completely change his outlook on that end of the floor. And given how young Chomche is, that isn't out of the question.

His journey to the NBA and the development process once he's in a system will be one of the most fascinating of any in this class.
