Bronny James Plays Sparingly in Collegiate Debut for USC
After several long months, Bronny James, the son of NBA legend Lebron James, finally made his collegiate debut for the USC Trojans Sunday.
Initially, the former consensus four-star guard was set to be a staple for the team this season alongside point guard Isaiah Collier, whose emerged as one of the top 2024 NBA Draft options through the college season so far.
In late-July, though, James suffered cardiac arrest, which was likely caused by a congenital heart defect identified in the initial evaluation, per a family spokesperson.
For awhile, it seemed James’ basketball future was in jeopardy following the serious medical emergency. But In late November, James was finally cleared for a full return to basketball.
On Sunday, USC took on Long Beach State University, falling in overtime to move to 5-4 on the season. James understandably played sparingly in the contest — playing 16 minutes and totaling 4 points on 1-for-3 shooting, three rebounds, two assists, two steals and one emphatic block — but it was an obviously massive milestone for James, his family and the Trojans.
LeBron was in attendance for the contest.
Once back in rhythm, his addition to the team will undoubtedly be big for USC, who could stand to use his infusion of outside shooting, athleticism and stingy defense.
Those very same skills could also carry him to the 2024 NBA Draft alongside Collier as a potential top selection.
The Trojans next take on SEC titan Auburn at noon on Sunday, Dec. 17, in what is sure to be a tough matchup.
