G.G. Jackson Erupts For 44 Points In Final Game As Rookie
Towards the end of the NBA regular season, fans typically witness some unlikely culprits record huge games. While Memphis Grizzlies rookie G.G. Jackson hadn’t previously scored 40 points in his young professional career, his 44-point outburst in his final game as a rookie fits in with his recent trend of excellence. Against the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday, Jackson dropped 31 points while shooting 7-for-13 from beyond the arc. Over his last 18 appearances, he’s averaged 20.4 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 0.8 steals per game while shooting just under 35% from 3 on 8.4 attempts per game. During this stretch, the 6-foot-9 forward has exhibited flashes of star potential with outings of 30, 35, and now 31 and 44 points.
Still just 19 years old, Jackson has etched his name in the record books multiple times with his accomplishments as the youngest player in the NBA. Most recently, in his 44-point, 12-rebound performance against the Denver Nuggets, he became the youngest player in NBA history with at least 40 points and 10 rebounds in a game.
With good size, an athletic frame, a smooth shooting stroke, and natural scoring skill, Jackson’s been able to produce as a complimentary play finisher while also creating his own shot. As the Ja Morant and the rest of the Grizzlies squad returns next season, Jackson could play a huge role alongside the core of Morant, Desmond Bane, Marcus Smart, and Jaren Jackson Jr. as Memphis looks to return to status as playoff factors in the Western Conference. His complimentary play will fit in well alongside these players and earn him playing time. However, his upside as a star wing scorer may be the key for the Grizzlies to reach the next level as true title contenders.
As Memphis turns the page to the 2024-25 season, and tries to put the lack of success this season in the rearview mirror, the emergence of Jackson as a franchise cornerstone serves as the brightest spot of the Grizzlies’ year.
