On draft night, former Villanova wing Cam Whitmore slid from the top of the lottery, his projected range, all the way to Houston at No. 20. Now, in 2023 Summer League, he appears to be trying to prove something to all those that passed on him.

On Thursday, Whitmore put together his best performance to date, scoring a blazing 26 points on 11-for-21 shooting and tacking on a whopping eight steals, which tied for a Summer League record. The performance, which included five rebounds, one assist and one block, helped carry Houston to a 17-point win over Trayce Jackson-Davis and the Warriors.

But it wasn’t Whitmore’s first good performance of the summer.

In his Rockets debut, he poured on 21 points on 16 shots to help propel the team to a win over Detroit.

In his second outing, Whitmore poured on an inefficient 16 points, but still managed eight rebounds, three assists and three steals in his best all-around performance. He finished with a +14 plus-minus to help best Oklahoma City.

In his three games in Las Vegas, Whitmore is averaging 21.0 points per game.

There’s still a variety of improvements points for Whitmore, most of which stem from general basketball IQ, feel for the game and shot diet. Whitmore has obvious natural ability as a basketball player, but it could take a bit to clean up his game at the NBA level.

Regardless, it seems the Rockets have left with yet another strong mid-draft addition.
