Intro

In the modern game, there are many ways you can make it to the NBA, from going to college, overseas or even the G League. Overtime Elite (OTE) is another path that NBA prospects are considering, but evaluating prospect Overtime Elite's prospects can be difficult as scouts are still figuring out the standard of competition. One way to determine how OTE players can translate to the league is by determining the similarities and differences in play style these leagues have to offer compared to the NBA.

Play Style Comp

All three leagues have the same top three play styles to create offense: P&R Ball Handler, Transition offense, and attacking from a spot up. OTE usually has a more similar play style than colleges.

Above is a visual on each league's playstyles. On average, 29.4% of Overtime Elites possession are in transition which is 9% higher than the NBA, while being at 16.1% in the NCAA. On average, a top 25-ranked high school basketball team relies on 31% of their offensive possession being from running transitions up and down the floor, which helps explain why OTEs primarily rely on playing fast to create offense since the average age of OTE players is 17 years old.

Name, Image, and Likeness

Overtime is massive on social media, with over 85 million followers across all platforms. This could lead to massive NIL opportunities and social media growth for these high schoolers. For example, Eli Ellis a 5-10 4 star guard who plays for OTE that jumped from less than 30,000 followers on Instagram to 327,000 followers after a year of playing for the City Reapers (OTE Team). Even though NIL numbers are usually not public, On3 has his evolution at around USD $247,000.

Conclusion

Overtime Elite offers another path for athletes, another path to the NBA, and there seem to be similarities between play styles in OTE compared to the NBA, especially on the offensive end. The longevity and credibility of the league will depend on the success of the Thompson twins.
