NBA Draft: The Best Landing Spots for Victor Wembanyama
We’re just three days away from the 2023 NBA Draft Lottery, where we’ll find out who will be leaving the draft with generational NBA prospect Victor Wembanyama.
Leading the LNB Pro A league in points, blocks and rebounds at just 19-years-old, Wembanyama is one of, if not the best, basketball prospects we’ve ever seen.
We’ve already taken a look at who needs Wembanyama the most, now let’s take a look at what the best fits for his talents are:
1. San Antonio Spurs
San Antonio has both a huge need for a primary talent and a near-spotless organizational track record near the top of the draft, making them the best overall fit for Wembanyama.
Alongside players like Devin Vassell, Keldon Johnson, Jeremy Sochan, Malaki Branham and more, Wembanyama would have a long leash to thrive and develop while honing his already solid skills.
The Spurs have developed plenty of superstar talents in the past and Wembanyama could be the next in line to don the black and silver.
2. Indiana Pacers
The Pacers, with budding star Tyrese Haliburton and versatile front-court piece Myles Turner, offer a solid landing spot for Wembanyama to kickstart his NBA career.
Wembanyama wouldn’t be relied on as a lead or primary right out of the gate alongside Haliburton, who, as one of the better passers and distributors in the league, could set Wembanyama up nicely both on the block and out on the perimeter.
Turner, who can slot in as both a traditional-style five or stretch four, and is similarly versatile on the defensive end of the court, would make Wembanyana’s life easier as he navigates the ins-and-outs of NBA rotations and roles.
3. Detroit Pistons
Despite averaging 21.5 points per game in a top-eight league in the world, it’s hard to look at Wembanyama as a focal point on offense, especially early in his career.
In tandem with Cade Cunningham, 2021’s first overall pick, Wembanyama could function as a 1B offensively while still being able to devote plenty of his attention to the defensive side of the ball, which is arguably where he’ll make most of his impact.
Jalen Duren, similarly to Turner, offers Wembanyama a built frontcourt pairing to take on the more physical assignments.
