Spurs, Victor Wembanyama Host Rematch Versus Lakers
On Wednesday, rookie Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs faced off agains the LeBron James-less Lakers in a tightly contested bout.
It was one of the better performances of the young phenoms career, on both ends of the floor. Offensively, Wembanyama posted 30 points on near-50% shooting, hitting four of his five 3-point tries. Additionally, he added 13 rebounds and two assists.
And for as good as his offensive skills were, his defense stole the show.
The counting stats were there — six blocks and three steals — but his rim-protection and shot deterring was on full display, and it was especially apparent against fellow 7-footer Anthony Davis.
All-in-all, it was an all-time rookie performance that capped a strong stretch for Wembanyama. In his last eight games, he’s averaged 20.6 points, 13.5 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.9 steals and a whopping 3.6 blocks while shooting 46% overall and 29% from beyond the arc.
His recent run has him hot on Oklahoma City Thunder rookie Chet Holmgren's heels in the Rookie of the Year race.
Wemby eventually fouled out of the game late, and the Lakers cruised to 3-point win off the backs of Davis, who posted 37 points, 10 rebounds and four steals.
Tonight, though, Wembanyama and co. will look to get their revenge.
Los Angeles will clearly look to limit the former No. 1 overall pick, but at 7-foot-4, that’s a tall task for anyone. Even Davis, who may very well be the Defensive Player of the Year frontrunner currently.
The Lakers and Spurs tip off at 6:30 p.m. CT from Frost Bank Center in San Antonio.
